Vodacom Tanzania (Vodacom), Smile Telecoms Holdings Limited, and Smile Telecoms IP Limited (jointly Smile) have concluded the terms upon which Vodacom will acquire 100% of the issued share capital of Smile Communications Tanzania Limited.

Details

Vodacom Tanzania acquired Smile for TZS 68.8bn (£22 m/€25m) just two years after Saudi investors spent $235m+ on a rescue deal.

Vodacom will synergize with SMILE’s extensive and super-Fast 4G LTE network, with coverage in Pwani, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Dodoma, Mwanza, Mbeya, Kilimanjaro, and Arusha, offering reliable and strong internet and voice services to its sizable customer base.

Between The Lines

As of March 2023, Smile had a total of 15,171 telecom subscribers, which indicates a 0.025% market share.

Reports say this acquisition will have a minor effect on the growth in Vodacom’s market share.

Data Insights

The latest data from 2022 indicates that Vodacom leads the market with 39% of subscriptions, followed by Tigo with 26%, Airtel with 22%, Halotel with 9%, and TTCL with 4%.
