Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle arm, is rolling out its first non-U.S. robotaxi deployment in London in 2026.
It will begin with vehicles driven by safety drivers for data collection, then transition to fully driverless service pending regulatory approval.
Why This Matters
Moove, a mobility-financing and fleet operations firm based in Africa, will play a central role in fleet management, charging, and maintenance in London—just as it does in U.S. markets for Waymo.
Regulatory path
The UK has already started pilot programs for autonomous ride-hail usage starting in spring 2026, under its Automated Vehicles Act framework.
Why London?
The UK offers London’s dense urban layout, regulatory openness to AV pilots, and Waymo’s existing engineering presence in Oxford and London.
Competition & context
Uber is also pushing into autonomous driving in London via a partnership with UK startup Wayve, aiming for trials in 2026.
