UPDATE: It would appear that the National Identification Authority (NIA) can’t seem to get their act today. After announcing that the Ghana Card ID would start on Monday (28th May), personnel for the NIA were a no-show to start registration of personnel of the police and military.

According to the NIA, they had to postpone the registration to June 8th due to “technical hitches”.

Even though it was supposed to have begun sometime last year, official registration and issuance of the Ghana Card officially begins today.

The first groups to be registered will be former heads of state, journalists and security officials before opened to the general public according to the National Identification Authority (NLA).

“The strategy is to be in the Greater Accra Region for about two to three months registering every Ghanaian and they we go onto the Volta Region, Northern Region, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Western Region, Ashanti Region, Eastern Region and then we end with the Central Region,” according to Professor Ken Attafuahhe CEO of the National Identification Authority.

The exercise is expected to cost $1.2 billion over 15 years.

After issuance of the Ghana ID card, other forms of identification such as Driving licences, National Health Insurance cards, baptismal certificates and voters identity cards will no longer be tenable as sources of identification.

Only birth certificates and passports will be used as identification for the acquisition of the card, as provided for by the National Identification Amendment Law 2017 (Act 950).
