Airtel Africa announced a partnership with SpaceX to provide high-speed internet via Starlink across its African markets.
The satellite internet service is currently licensed in 9 of Airtel’s 14 operating countries, with licensing underway in the remaining five.
Why it matters
The deal aims to bridge Africa’s digital divide by expanding coverage to remote schools, health centers, and communities where traditional connectivity is limited.
Airtel will also explore using Starlink for cellular backhaul to extend rural coverage.
Between the lines
The partnership will allow Starlink to leverage Airtel’s ground infrastructure, while both companies explore broader efforts to deepen digital inclusion across the continent.
What they’re saying:
- “Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure every individual, business, and community has reliable and affordable connectivity even in the most remote parts of Africa,” said Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar.
- “Working with Airtel makes great sense… they’ve played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom story,” said Chad Gibbs, VP of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX.
