Bank Of Ghana Announces Trial Of Mobile Money Interoperability Between Ghana and Nigeria

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 2 Min Read

At an event at the IMF/World Bank Fall Meetings, Kwame Oppong, the Director of Fintech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana, addressed the crowd, delivering remarks on behalf of the Bank’s Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and announced that Ghana would pioneer the testing of mobile money interoperability with U.S.-owned Brij Technologies Inc.

This initiative will be trialed in Ghana’s Regulatory Sandbox, utilizing the BrijX Currency Swap Platform—a digital marketplace enabling direct currency swaps between Ghanaian Cedis and Nigerian Naira without the need for traditional forex.

About The Platform

The BrijX platform is designed as a Business-to-Business (B2B) marketplace to simplify cross-border transactions and increase financial accessibility for individuals and small businesses.

By eliminating the need for traditional foreign exchange channels, BrijX provides an affordable, efficient way for Ghanaians and Nigerians to trade directly.

Why This Matters

With over 500 million mobile money users in Africa, the continent is a global leader in mobile financial services. However, the lack of interoperability across different currencies and borders has been a significant barrier.

By enabling cross-border transactions and currency swaps through platforms like BrijX, Africa can realize its vision of a more inclusive digital economy, unlocking the potential for millions of individuals and businesses.

Looking Ahead

The commercial launch of BrijX will take place on November 19, 2024, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

This event is set to bring together leaders in finance and technology as Brij Technologies Inc. unveils its platform to the wider African market.
