Canadian infrastructure giant Rektron Group Inc. has announced plans to acquire a 60% controlling stake in AT Ghana, the state-owned telecom operator formerly known as AirtelTigo.
Why it matters
The deal marks Rektron’s strategic entry into Ghana’s telecom market — and a rare large-scale foreign acquisition in the sector since AT was nationalised in 2021.
The big picture
Rektron is partnering with local telecom firm Afritel Ghana, founded by industry veteran Nana Richmond Aggrey, to execute the deal.
- AT Ghana currently serves 2.3 million customers.
- It offers voice, data, mobile money, and enterprise services.
- The company was fully nationalised after Bharti Airtel and Millicom exited in 2021.
What they’re saying:
- “This aligns with our global vision to advance infrastructure, foster innovation, and deliver value across emerging markets,” — Atanas Kolarov, CEO, Rektron.
- “This partnership brings strategic investment and next-gen infrastructure to improve access and reduce data costs,” — Nana Richmond Aggrey, Founder, Afritel Ghana.
Between the lines
The Ghanaian government has signed an MoU with Rektron and Afritel as of May 21, 2025, laying the groundwork for the deal.
What’s next
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and due diligence. Rektron cautioned that there’s “no assurance” the deal will be finalised.
