OpenAI has unveiled a new generation of apps that users can chat with directly inside ChatGPT. Developers can start building them today with the new Apps SDK, released in preview.
By the numbers
- Available today to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU
- 800M+ potential users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans
- Pilot partners: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, Zillow
How it works
These apps appear naturally during conversations or can be called by name — for example, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party.” They respond to natural language and include interactive features such as maps, playlists, and presentations—all within the chat.
ChatGPT will suggest apps when they’re contextually relevant. If you’re discussing travel, for instance, it might surface Booking.com or Expedia; when talking about home buying, it could suggest Zillow to browse listings interactively.
For users
Apps adapt to your chat context to help you create, learn, and explore without leaving the conversation.
For developers
The new Apps SDK—built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP)—lets developers build and test apps in Developer Mode. Later this year, OpenAI will begin accepting submissions for review and provide details on app monetization.
The big picture
This marks a major step toward making ChatGPT a platform for interactive, conversational computing. As more developers build with the Apps SDK, ChatGPT could become a hub where productivity, creativity, and AI blend seamlessly in real time.
What’s next
Apps will roll out to EU users soon, with additional pilot partners expected later this year.
