According to open data from Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board, 2023 and 2024 saw a huge spike in claims for refugee status by Ghanaians.
In 2023, a total of 1,441 claims by made by Ghanaians. 126 of those claims were accepted and 64 were rejected.
In 2024, a total of 1,226 claims have been made so far since March 2024.
In previous years, refugee claims by Ghanaians were well below 400.
