Africhange, a UK-licensed cross-border fintech, has teamed up with Griffin, a UK bank specializing in fintech partnerships, to launch GBP bank and savings accounts for its users in the UK.
Why it matters
Opening a traditional bank account in the UK can be a major hurdle for immigrants, who often lack proof of address like utility bills or council tax statements.
Without a bank account, newcomers struggle to receive salaries, pay bills, or even get a phone contract — creating a “catch-22” that slows financial inclusion.
The details
- The new Africhange GBP Account, powered by Griffin, gives each user a unique Sort Code and Account Number — unlike typical virtual wallets.
- Users can receive payments directly, hold GBP balances, and transfer funds within the Africhange app.
- Customers will also get access to savings options, backed by Griffin’s regulatory oversight and Africhange’s customer-first design.
- 24/7 customer support will be available through chat, email, and phone.
What they’re saying
- “As a founder who’s lived the immigrant journey, launching our UK bank account with Griffin is personal,” said David Ajala, CEO of Africhange. “We’re moving beyond remittances to become a true financial partner, giving our community a trusted place to hold and manage their UK finances.”
- David Jarvis, CEO of Griffin, added: “Too many immigrants face unnecessary friction accessing basic bank accounts. We’re proud to help Africhange users access the financial tools they need to live and work in the UK.”
- Michael Price, COO of Africhange UK, called the partnership “a turning point,” adding that it “sets a new standard for inclusive, cross-border banking.”
The big picture
Africhange entered the UK market in July 2024, initially offering money transfers to Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.
With licenses in Canada and other regions, the company supports multi-currency transfers across several countries, including the US, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, India, and Australia.
