Service providers say they experienced outages due to damaged undersea cables

Yesterday, Netblocks, an internet observing and monitoring company, noticed a major disruption in internet connectivity in Kenya.

The loss of connectivity comes after a crackdown by police on protestors campaigning against a Finance Bill in the country.

Safaricom, the largest internet service provider, stated that the disruption in connectivity was due to undersea cable outages.

Denial of Shutdown

The Kenya Communications Authority came out with a statement denying that it had shut down the internet due to the ongoing protests.

Protesters have been campaigning against a Finance Bill which aims to raise taxes on certain amenities and services which the protesters say will increase the burden on cost of living in the country.
