The Ghanaian government is in active negotiations with a strategic investor to take over and revamp AT (formerly AirtelTigo), according to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George.
Why it matters
AT, a state-owned telecom operator, has struggled to compete since the government took over in 2021. The planned deal is part of efforts to inject capital and technical know-how to revive the company and strengthen market competition.
“Maybe for the first time, I will put out that the government is currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AT,” said George during a stakeholder meeting with telecom CEOs on May 30.
Timeline
- A 60-day window has been set to finalize the deal.
- The government expects a full rollout of improved AT services by end of Q3 2025.
Zoom out
- Cabinet has also approved new spectrum allocations for MTN and Telecel.
- The government is considering connecting entity licenses to help AT and Telecel access NGIC infrastructure.
“MTN is also welcome if they are interested to take part of those resources,” George noted.
