Ghana’s Ministry of Roads and Highways has launched a mobile app and outdoored a call centre for citizens to report on road defects in their communities.

Details

The initiative called “Maintain My Road,” aims to streamline the process of reporting and addressing road maintenance issues to help with quicker responses to administer more efficient repairs.

A call centre would also be available to assist as an alternate for users without access to smartphone devices. The centre would operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays.

Digging Deeper

The Maintain My Road app has currently been released on Android. It is also available on iOS devices but was not available at the time of publication.

The app allows users to upload pictures and descriptions of road defects, and tag the exact location using GPS to track the status of the reports.

Between The Lines

The mobile app was developed by the same group that also developed the recently launched Tap N Go service for Mass transport buses in Ghana.

Zoom Out

According to the Ministry, the initiative will be piloted for the next five months and will focus on main trunk roads and urban centres such as Accra-Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale.

The call centre will be staffed by multilingual persons fluent in English, Twi, Ga, and Ewe, and equipped with a geolocation-enabled dashboard to accurately pinpoint reported issues.

What They’re Saying

The mobile app will enhance public engagement and enable citizens to report road issues and contribute to maintenance efforts directly, ensuring efficient response and timely resolution of issues,” Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister of Roads and Highways said at the launch.

“I just want to assure the people that the Accra Kumasi highway will see major maintenance activities that will improve drastically the conditions of the road, as well as the Accra-Tema Motorway,” he added.
