The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and mobile network operators (MNOs), is advancing talks with stakeholders in The Gambia to implement the ECOWAS Free Roaming Initiative.
This effort seeks to reduce telecom costs for citizens traveling between Ghana and The Gambia, fostering seamless communication and deeper economic ties.
The big picture
• The negotiations, taking place from November 19-21, 2024, will culminate in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enable MNOs to start technical and regulatory discussions.
• Full implementation and launch of the ECOWAS Roaming Regulations are expected in the first half of 2025.
Why it matters
This initiative highlights Ghana’s leadership in driving regional connectivity and consumer protection within the telecommunications sector.
Ghanaians already benefit from affordable roaming services in Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Benin through existing bilateral agreements.
What they’re saying
• Prof. Ezer Osei Yeboah-Boateng, Deputy Director General (Technical Operations) of the NCA, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to regional integration:
“This collaboration with The Gambia marks the next phase in extending affordable telecom services across the region.”
• Mr. Solo Sima, Deputy Director General of The Gambia’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), added:
“The ECOWAS Free Roaming Initiative will foster regional connectivity, create employment opportunities, and support business growth across West Africa.”
What’s next
Once the MOU is signed, technical and regulatory frameworks will be developed, paving the way for affordable roaming between Ghana and The Gambia by mid-2025.
