Ghana Police Equipped With New Speed Detection Devices For Apprehending Speed Limit Violators

The Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police have been equipped with speed detection devices to help to apprehend violators of speed limits in the city.

The speed detection device called the Laser Cam 4, is a speed detection gun that can capture at once multiple motorists that violate the speed limit.

The devices were provided to the MTTD by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Bloomberg Philanthropies for Global Road Safety.

Speaking at a training session during the handoff of the devices, Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah had this to say:

We have a major challenge with speeding in Accra, this year over 1,500 people have died from road crashes. 95% of all vehicles on the Kawukudi-37 link were speeding above the speed limit and this is unacceptable. Once the police capture the evidence of your speeding and present it to the court, your guess is as good as mine.”

The Business Development Engineer for the ROBTECH, suppliers of the new speed guns said, the device could read speed of 52 cars in 30 seconds and could capture the number plates of these vehicles.

The new speed detection has features such as auto-tracking, optimisation of target-specific measurements and simplification of the user experience.

A staff officer of the Central MTTD, ASP Richard Nyarko noted that the Ghana Police didn’t have the equipment to provide real-time evidence of speeding when drivers are caught but with the new devices, they can now have concrete evidence to prosecute offenders.
