According to B&FT, the Ministry of Communications is suspending the processing of switching from analog to digital terrestrial television (DTT) system due to measures by the government in its fight against COVID-19.

The project which was due to be completed by June is currently being suspended due to procurement issues as a result of the partial lockdown of Greater Accra, Kasoa and Kumasi.

The DTT has caught up with the lockdown issues because there is some procurement that we need to do that are stuck at public procurement authority,” Minister of Communication, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said.

The ministry had earlier stated that it has 42 transmission sites nationwide had been completed and all connected to the National Electricity Grid.

A Central Digital Transmission Company (CDTC) had been established to facilitate the smooth interaction between broadcasters and the platform operator.

There was earlier controversy regarding an introduction of a fee for access to digital channels which was said to be free.

Introduction of the Digital Access Fee (DAF) will require all citizens to acquire new digital Set-Top Boxes (STBs), which are compatible with the National Communication Authority’s (NCA) recently published standards.
