Ghana’s Rent Control Department To Digitise Its Operations In March 2024

Ghana’s Rent Control Department (RCD) has announced its plan to digitise its operations next month in March after a successful pilot test.

About Ghana’s RCD

The Rent Control Department (RCD) of Ghana is a government institution that works co-operatively with landlords and tenants to promote optimum peaceful co-existence through education, reconciliation and enforcement of the Rent Act 220.

The RCD is responsible for controlling rents and the recovery of possession of premises in certain cases, as well as providing guidance on rent matters.

Driving The News

According to Mr Francis Asenso Boakye, the Minister of Works and Housing, the upcoming system will enable tenants, landlords, and the RCD to conduct every activity remotely through a portal. He stated that the portal will become active in March 2024 after pilot testing.

He also noted that the government is reviewing the Rent Act, which is presently before Parliament, to respond to the changing dynamics of the rental market.

Why This Matters

The RCD has faced some challenges in delivering its services to the public, such as long queues, paperwork, corruption, and inefficiency. The RCD’s digitistation process will allow its activities, including interactions with clients on complaints and payment services, to be done online.

The digitalization is expected to boost service delivery, curb corruption, enhance transparency and accountability, and improve access to safe, adequate, and affordable rental accommodation in Ghana. The system will also allow users to publish properties, market them, and connect with landlords and potential tenants.
