Ghana’s Vice President’s Promise Of Free Laptops For School Students Sounds Like A Bad Idea

2 Min Read

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that plans on supplying all senior high schools (SHSs) with laptop computers next academic year.

What They’re Saying

The Vice President stated that said the initiative would save the country money spent on printing textbooks.

The Controversy

This would not be the first time that the central government has proposed giving students laptops for education, In 2021, the government signed an agreement with RLG to supply schools with laptops but failed to deliver.

The deal also fell through when reports of sub-standard quality of the laptops were reported by both students and teachers.

Digging Deeper

The Government already has a pending lawsuit with the teacher’s union for its One Laptop One Teacher policy in which the union cited issues including the RLG case and the cost splitting of the purchase of the laptops (Teachers would pay 30% of the cost).

Tablets Vs Laptops

There are arguments that can be made that tablet devices might be better alternatives for replacing textbooks in school compared to laptops as well as saving costs.

The average cost of a tablet device is about $50 to $600 compared to a laptop which is between $600 – $1000
