WhatsApp Message Summaries (also known as Private Message Summaries) allows Meta AI to generate concise, bullet-point overviews of large or unread chats—this includes group chats.
The feature relies on Private Processing—a secure system that ensures neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access your chat content or the generated summary.
Summaries are private and visible only to the user; other chat participants won’t know you’ve summarized the chat.
The feature is optional and disabled by default. You must enable it manually, and you can choose which chats—including specific groups—are eligible via Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
Currently rolling out in the United States (English only), with broader availability and language support expected later in 2025.

How To Use Summaries
1. Update WhatsApp
Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp, since the feature is only available to users with recent app updates.
2. Enable the Feature
Navigate to Settings → Chats → Private Processing (or Privacy → Advanced Chat Privacy) and enable “Message Summaries” or a similar AI summary option.
Optionally, toggle on Advanced Chat Privacy to restrict the feature to select chats or groups only.
3. Look for the Summary Icon in Group Chats
Open a group chat with many unread messages. If available, you’ll see a small summary button or icon near the unread message indicator.
4. Tap the Summary Button
When tapped, Meta AI generates a brief summary—usually bullet-point formatted—that gives you an overview of what’s going on in the group chat.
This summary is private, instantaneous, and remains unread by other participants.
5. Optionally Adjust or Disable
If you want to disable summaries for certain groups (e.g., sensitive ones), head back to Advanced Chat Privacy and switch the feature off for specific chats.
If you’d entirely like to turn off the feature, go to Settings → Private Processing and toggle it off.
