How To: Make Audio and Video Calls on X (Twitter)

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 2 Min Read

X(formally known as Twitter) has recently introduced audio and video calling features, allowing users to connect more directly with their followers and friends.

The feature update is now rolling out to all users which will enable non-paying users on X to make or receive calls.

Here’s how to use it:

1. Eligibility

Before you start making calls, ensure that you meet the following criteria:

  • The person you want to call has sent you a Direct Message (DM) at least once before.

2. Accessing the Calling Feature

To access the calling feature, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Direct Messages by tapping the envelope icon.
  2. Choose an existing DM conversation or start a new one.
  3. Tap on the envelope icon.

3. Making an Audio or Video Call

Once you’re in the DM conversation, you can choose between an audio call or a video call:

  • Audio Call: Tap the phone icon to start an audio call.
  • Video Call: Tap the video camera icon to start a video call.

4. Notifications

When you call someone:

  • The recipient will receive a notification that you’re calling them.
  • If they miss the call, they’ll receive a notification that they missed it.

Enhanced Call Privacy

Twitter now offers enhanced call privacy settings:

  • With this setting enabled, your IP address will be hidden from people you call and receive calls from.
  • If both parties have this setting disabled (which is the default), the call is routed peer-to-peer, potentially revealing each other’s IP addresses.
  • If either party enables this setting, calls are relayed through Twitter’s infrastructure, masking IP addresses.
