Instagram has been steadily chipping away at Snapchat by “borrowing” some of its famous features (see: Instagram Stories)

Now, according to TheVerge.com, Instagram is now coming out with a new app called Threads.

Threads is designed as a companion app to Instagram. On the Threads app, it invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with more text, photo, and video messages.

The app is currently being tested internally at Facebook.

This app could be a shot at Snapchat as Instagram as it’s been reported that Snapchat users spend more time on Snapchat especially in the messaging section.

With a focus on messaging, the Threads app is another attempt by Facebook to increase engagement time on Instagram.

The messaging section looks similar to Instagram. Messages from friends appear in a central feed, with a green dot indicating which of your friends are currently active. There is also a camera for capturing photos and videos and sending it to friends.

There’s no word on when the Threads app might launch.
