Instagram has begun the rollout of Teen accounts for users under the age of 18. The new Accounts will have built-in protections that limit who can contact them and the content they see, and also provide new ways for teens to explore their interests.

Teens under 16 will need a parent’s permission to change any of these settings to be less strict.

Details

The accounts of all minors on Instagram will be private by default (not just teens under 16). Teens will be placed in the strictest messaging settings, so they can only be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to.

Teens will automatically be placed into the most restrictive setting of our sensitive content control, which limits the type of sensitive content (such as content that shows people fighting or promotes cosmetic procedures) teens see in places like Explore and Reels.

Teen accounts will also have a “Sleep mode” which will be turned on between 10 PM and 7 AM. Sleep Mode will mute notifications overnight and send auto replies to DMs.

Zoom In

Instagram is updating some of its parental controls for Teen accounts. Parents will able to see who their teen has messaged in the past seven days as well as set total daily time limits for using Instagram.

Teens over the age of 16 tweak these settings but younger teens will need the permission of a parent to make any changes.

What Happens Next

Instagram’s teen accounts are rolling out gradually to users in the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada. Teens Accounts will roll out globally in January 2025.
