Thursday 9th May, Accra, GhanaMEST Africa in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation officially launched their EdTech Fellowship with twelve (12) EdTech Companies.

The Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship is designed to support promising African EdTech companies with critical business and financial support, with insight into the science of learning, preparing them for scale, sustainability, and impact.

The event had special invited guests including Ghana’s Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who gave a speech about the progress of education in Ghana. He also officially launch the fellowship.

Angela Duho, Program Manager at MEST Africa, expressed her enthusiasm about the selected companies, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome these visionary companies into the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship at MEST Africa. Their innovative solutions hold the promise of transforming education in Ghana, and we are excited to support their growth and impact.”

Through our partnership with MEST Africa, we are working to increase access to quality and relevant learning for Ghana and Africa’s underserved learners through locally developed technology-enabled solutions. In 2023, the solutions by the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship cohorts in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya reached 2.6 million learners. We look forward to an even greater impact this year,” said Joseph Nsengimana, Director of the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning.

Selected Companies

Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship Cohort

Companies who were selected for the fellowship are as follows:

  • DeafcanTalk – A startup which provides accessibility for Deaf students with assistive technology, removing communication barriers and enabling inclusive education.
  • Coral Reef – A hub which prepares students for the future workforce through AI, content development, and Edtech services
  • eCampus – An online platform which helps learning with technology-driven solutions, facilitating smarter studying, employability, and prosperity for a billion learners worldwide.
  • Inspiring Teachers – A nonprofit helping teachers improve the learning outcomes for Ghanaian children by leveraging their combined expertise in teacher training and program development.
  • Firefly IO – A startup which pioneers hands-on STEAM and Robotics education, fostering curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills to empower students to make real-world impacts.
  • PerbiCubs – A literacy program using engaging digital tools to address poor reading skills among Ghanaian and African children.
  • Q Know Edtech – A startup which democratizes education by offering quality learning resources and personalized tutoring, utilizing technology and educator expertise to provide accessible educational opportunities.
  • Alpha Virtual Academy – A comprehensive digital learning platform for K-9 schools in Ghana, featuring interactive modules, assessments, teacher training, and administrative tools to enhance education quality and accessibility
  • Wonderspaced – An educational content creation, publishing, and distribution platform for primary school students and educators focused on, promoting critical thinking, creativity, and literacy through interactive content.
  • Ayaprep – An educational application that teaches mathematics in local Ghanaian languages, enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in learning
  • Loozeele Academy – A STEM-focused early childhood education in the Upper East region, offering comprehensive learning experiences and practical exposure at an accessible cost
  • Dext Technology – An edtech startup which develops and deploys innovative, user-friendly and affordable tools for the effective learning of basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

During the event, there was a panel session hosted by Bernard Avle, Host of CitiFM Morning show, who asked panelists about education in Ghana, the challenges of edtech startups in scaling and the current policies that exist to enable the edtech ecosystem.
