The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta recently announced a reduction in the Communication Service Tax from 9% to 5%.
The announcement was made during his presentation of the Mid Year Budget to parliament
With a reduction in the tax, it is expected that the cost of voice calls and data will lead to a reduction for consumers.
The reduction is set to take place in September.
The Communication Service Tax
The Communication Service Tax was first introduced in 2008. It was recently revised in 2019 from 6% to 9%.
The reason for the increase as stated by the Ministry was that the revenue from the tax would be used to create a viable technology ecosystem as well as help identify and combat cybercrime.
There was some controversy with the implementation of the tax by the telecom companies when they passed the costs onto consumers.
