MTN Nigeria has raised internet prices to implement the 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January.

The adjustments impact several data plans, with the 1.8GB monthly plan now costing ₦1,500, up from ₦1,000, and the 20GB plan increasing to ₦7,500 from ₦5,500.

Why it matters

The telecom sector had maintained unchanged tariffs for 11 years despite soaring inflation and Naira devaluation. Operators argue the adjustments were necessary to sustain services.

By the numbers

  • 15GB plan: ₦6,500 (up from ₦4,500)
  • 90-day 1.5TB plan: ₦240,000 (previously ₦150,000)
  • 600GB 90-day plan: ₦120,000 (up from ₦75,000)
  • Some daily plans have been shortened in validity, with 2-day plans now lasting 1 day and 7-day plans reduced to 6 days.

What they’re saying

  • It’s not a 50% increase on every plan, but rather an across-the-board adjustment. Some plans remain unchanged to ensure we keep the grassroots connected. For instance, the 2.5GB daily plan at ₦600 has not been affected,” an MTN Nigeria executive told TechCabal anonymously.
  • A source at Airtel confirmed the company has introduced a 25 kobo flat rate for all voice calls but has yet to adjust data prices.

Between the lines

While MTN and SWIFT Networks have implemented the hike, Airtel and Globacom are expected to follow suit later this month.

What’s next

The industry-wide adjustments took effect Monday afternoon, with further changes anticipated as more telecom operators comply with the NCC directive.
