Multichoice Withdraws DSTV Service From Malawi

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 1 Min Read

MultiChoice Africa has decided to withdraw its services from Malawi with immediate effect.

This is due to an injunction by the High Court in Lilongwe, Malawi in a matter between MultiChoice Malawi (MCM) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) prohibiting an adjustment of DSTV tariffs.

Details

The High Court in its judgment made a ruling which prevent Multichoice from increasing its price. Failure to adhere to the court’s decision would result in sanctions including imprisonment for management of MCM.

MCM stated that because of the increasingly adverse regulatory environment, it is therefore left with no option but to terminate the DStv service indefinitely.

What Happens Next

Multichoice sent notice to DSTV customers to halt payment for the DStv service.

Customers who have already paid their new subscription for the DStv service will have those services honored until the current 30 day viewing cycle ends on or before 10 September 2023.

From Wednesday, 9 August 2023, no new subscriptions or reconnections will be accepted.
