Ghana’s National Communication Authority (NCA) is inviting comments from the public on the issue of Management of Promotional Messages from Telecom Networks.

Details

The NCA is currently drafting Guidelines on how networks should manage the promotional messages they send to consumers.

The primary objectives of these guidelines are to establish industry standards and requirements for transmitting network promotional messages, ensuring such messages are sent transparently, ethically, and legally.

The guidelines aim to protect consumer rights by providing clear opt-in and opt-out mechanisms, regulate the frequency and timing of promotional messages and harmonise sender identification names and short codes for better consumer recognition.

Between The Lines

The consultation period for public commentary is currently ongoing and will conclude on 19th September 2024.

The draft guidelines can be found here.

Why This Matters

Currently, most telecom networks send promotional messages to consumers about deals and other network offers but don’t visibly offer options to stop or pause these messages.
