Update: National Identification Authority To Issue “Instant” ID Cards Starting September 15th

Update: The new date for the proposed National ID will begin in November. Check the updated story here.

On September 15th, 2017, the National Identification Authority (NIA), will issue National Identity Card to Ghanaian citizens.

But there’s a catch.

According to the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, citizens living in areas with adequate internet coverage, will be able to get their cards within 10 minutes of filling out their application forms.

People in areas with poor or no internet will have the printing of their cards deferred for a longer period.

Will we finally get our ID cards?

Questions To Be Asked

There’s still a lot of questions to be answered about the new national ID cards. How will they look like? What technologies will be implemented in this cards? Can they used with banks? Can I load money on them? Is there an online application people will need to fill out?

Hopefully, the answers to these questions will be out in public as the date for September 15 draws nearer.

Will the NIA even be able to roll out these cards by the deadline? This is not the first time we’ve been promised National ID Cards.

Hopefully, things go as planned.
