Starlink Goes Live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Expanding Its African Footprint

SpaceX’s satellite internet service enters its 22nd African market

1 Min Read

Starlink has officially launched in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after receiving a telecom license from the Congolese Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARPTC).

The license was granted to Starlink DRC S.A., a locally registered subsidiary.

Why it matters

The DRC has some of the lowest internet penetration rates in Africa, largely due to poor terrestrial infrastructure. Starlink’s satellite-based tech sidesteps these issues by beaming internet directly from low Earth orbit, enabling coverage in even the most remote areas.

Zoom out

  • Starlink is now active in 22 African countries as part of its mission to bridge the continent’s digital divide.
  • The service offers high-speed, low-latency broadband, potentially transforming sectors like education, healthcare, and e-commerce in underserved regions.
