Lagos, April 25, 2024 – Ride-hailing company Uber and the Lagos State government reportedly reached an agreement to share real-time trip details with the government.
Details
In March 2024, it was reported that Uber was resisting the demand of the Lagos state government for real-time data access, citing privacy concerns. Other companies including Bolt and inDrive, were complying with the new requirements.
The Lagos government responded by impounding vehicles belonging to Uber drivers.
What They’re Saying
According to Olasunkanmi Ojowuro, Lagos state director of transport operations, both parties have made concessions. The impounded Uber cars have been released “based on compassionate grounds,”. Uber has yet to comment publicly on the agreement.
Zoom Out
Uber was already providing daily trip data to the government but local authorities insisted on a more immediate solution. But Uber resisted, citing privacy concerns.
Previously, the Lagos government argued that real-time data access was important for user safety and identification in emergencies.
