Uber, the popular ride-sharing platform, is launching a Lite version of its mobile app. Uber Lite will be first launching in India as Uber starts to focus on emerging markets. The app focuses on space-saving experience for users with limited data plans, spottier connectivity, and slower than average internet speeds.
It will only be compatible with Android phones.
Uber Lite will be less than 5MB to download compared to 181.4 MB for the regular app. When users use the app, they’ll be presented with a stripped down design of the app. Maps will be optional so the performance of the app can be faster. In-app support and ability to share trips with friends and family will remain.
The app will use GPS for the rider’s location as well as guessing possible destinations. The app will cache (save locally) the city’s top places so that even when users are offline, no network is needed for them to select their destination.
Uber Lite For African Countries?
No word on when the Uber Lite will be coming to African countries like Nigeria and Ghana since some places in the countries have issues with spotty connectivity. But it would be a welcome addition.
