Users in Kumasi should be prepared for the arrival of Uber.
According to Alon Lits, General Manager of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, Uber will start operations in Kumasi by the close of the third quarter. Users should look out for the service to be operational by September 2017, according to Mr Lits.
Uber officially launched in Accra last year (2016) and the service seems to be have been well received. Uber does seem to have adapted to the landscape by offering “Cash” payment options and allowing local taxi drivers to sign up for the service.
But along the way, there have been hitches with Uber. For instance, there have been complaints by customers about how some Uber drivers don’t read maps correctly when driving to locations. But on the other side, Uber drivers have also complained of bad riders (I wrote a story about what it was to be an Uber driver in Accra)
It should be interesting to see how well Uber does in Kumasi. Accra can be a handful but Kumasi is a whole other dimension.
But one thing is far sure, there’s going to be a lot of fanfare when Uber starts operating in Kumasi. If people of Kumasi can get excited about their new mall, they’re definitely going to be excited about their Uber service.
