Uganda has imposed a 25% import duty on fully electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric motorcycles.

Zoom Out

Uganda’s Revenue Authority has previously zero-rated import duties on electric cars which saw an import of 420 EV cars (403 hybrids and 17 Full EVs) in 2023-2024. This was a sharp increase from the import of 26 EV cars the previous year when duties were in place.

By The Numbers

The new import duty will push the price of imported EVs like a Nissan Leaf to $68,750 (Ush 255.3 Million) from a previous price of $55,000 (Ush 204.3 million)

Between The Lines

A Stamp Duty (Amendment) Bill 2024 which was passed in May will exempt local companies manufacturing electric vehicles, electric batteries, or electric vehicle charging equipment or fabricators of a frame and body of an electric vehicle and employing 80% of Ugandans, from paying the 25% duty.

The Bill also requires companies to use at least 80% of the locally produced raw materials to qualify for the exemption.
