Ghana’s Minister of Communications & Digitalisation, Ms Ursulu Owusu, today gave a rundown on the internet outage that occurred in Ghana on Thursday, 14th March 2024.

On Causes Of The Cable Cuts

The Minister stated that although there hasn’t been confirmation, it’s likely that the submarine cables were damaged due to a landslide under the sea.

Damages And Switching To Alternate Providers

Four cables were affected including the SAT3, WACS, ACE, and Main One. The only two submarine cables in Africa that weren’t affected were Aquiano & Glo-1.

MTN has officially migrated to the ACE network; Telecel onto SAT 3, WACS & ACE.

The minister also stated that the Facebook/Meta submarine fibre optic connection to Africa will provide Internet at 180tbps but is it yet to come online.

Starlink Licensing In Ghana Later in 2024

Starlink has a date on its website for being operational in Ghana in Q3 of 2024. The Minister said the company is in the process of being licensed.

However, Starlink has indicated to government officials that it will service high-end customers when it launches in the country.

Switching To RASCOM

The minister in her statements urged Internet Service Providers in the country to subscribe to the Africa-owned RASCOM for affordability.

RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Communications Organization) is a multilateral organization that was created in May 1992. Its mission is to construct and operate an earth-orbiting satellite system to provide point-to-multipoint telecommunications services throughout Africa.
