What You Need to Know About The Ghana Police Traffitech System

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 2 Min Read

Traffitech GH is a new initiative by the Ghana Police Service to automate road traffic law enforcement and improve road safety in Ghana.

It is a technology-driven system that uses cameras and sensors to capture and penalize traffic offenders in real-time.

Here are some key facts about Traffitech and how it works.

  • Traffitech was launched in August 2023 by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and other stakeholders.

  • It uses cameras and sensors to automatically take a picture and/or video of vehicles that flout road traffic laws and regulations, such as speeding, jumping red lights, wrongful overtaking, non-use of seatbelts, use of mobile phones while driving, etc.

  • It automatically transfers the recorded pictures and/or videos to a back office for validation and issuance of a notification by SMS to the vehicle owner for payment.

  • It also sends a notification indicating the location, date, and time of the traffic offense, as well as the vehicle registration number, offense description, payment amount, and deadline.

    • Traffitech allows offenders to pay the fine specified on the ticket without going to court unless they want to challenge the ticket.

    • Payment of Traffitech-GH fine can be made through Mobile Money, Online via Traffitech-Gh.gov.gh or physically at any Bank within 14 days from the date of issuance of the notification. The procedure for payment shall be specified in the notification.

      • Offenders will pay an additional 1% penalty on the original Traffitech-GH fine for each day of default after the 14 days allowable payment period.
