  • Reports say that close to 600 employees have been laid off
  • The layoffs were blamed on the challenging economic environment in Nigeria and the election landscape

According to a report by Semafor Africa, Alerzo, a technology-enabled middleman distributor of groceries to mom-and-pop retailers in Nigeria, has laid off hundreds of employees and closed many of its 40 warehouses in the country.

It is currently estimated that close to 600 employees were laid off. The CFO for Alerzo stated that a number of warehouses had been “suspended” but did not confirm the number of employees laid off.

In discussion with our supplier partners and their market views along with investors and management in an accelerated manner to get us to profitability by summer.” stated the CFO.

The layoffs were blamed on Nigeria’s challenging economic climate in the past year which he expects will be worsened by “uncertainty around the post-election landscape.”
