Sunon Asogli Plans To Develop a 508 MW Power Plant In Ghana

The company also plans to build a solar plant before the end of 2025

Sunon Asogli, Ghana’s largest independent power producer (IPP), has submitted plans to develop a 508 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in the Kpone area in the country.

The company which already operates two plants totaling 560 MW of gas-fired CCGT capacity, will build a third project which will raise the company’s capacity to over 1 GW

The company is owned by Shenzhen Energy Group (60%) and the China Africa Development Fund (40%).

Digging Deeper

Sunon Asogli also plans to develop a 100 MW wind project in Ada and a 200 MW utility-scale solar power plant in northern Ghana, with sites at Tamale, Yendi, Sawla, and Wa.

The first 50 MW power plant would be developed within 12 months and the remaining 150 MW capacity would be commissioned before the end of 2025. All the power will be sold to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Data Points

At the end of 2023, gas accounted for 49% of the installed capacity in Ghana with 2.7 GW, followed by hydro (29%) with 1.6 GW and oil (20%) with 1.1 GW.
