Triggerfish, a leading African animation studio, has partnered with UNESCO to launch The Creator Labs, a transformative initiative aimed at advancing gender equity in African animation.
Why it matters
The African film and audiovisual industries contribute $5 billion to the continent’s GDP and employ over 5 million people. Despite this, women—especially women of color—are underrepresented in leadership roles within the animation sector.
The details
The Creator Labs offers tailored capacity-building programs:
- Director Lab for aspiring directors.
- Animation Art Lab for artists.
Labs will include masterclasses, mentorship, and networking with award-winning professionals like Ng’endo Mukii (Kizazi Moto), Cinzia Angelini (Mila), and Nadia Darries (Star Wars Visions Vol. 2).
Free training materials will be accessible online via the Triggerfish Academy.
What they’re saying
• UNESCO’s Ernesto Ottone R: “This partnership addresses gaps in education and training that disproportionately affect women.”
• Triggerfish’s Carina Lücke: “Empowering women in animation is essential for a more diverse and inclusive industry.”
What’s next
Applications open December 9, 2024, and close January 5, 2025. Training begins March 2025.
