Chinese automaker BYD plans to install 200 to 300 fast-charging stations across South Africa by the end of 2026, according to TechCentral, citing Executive Vice President Stella Li.

The details:

  • The investment cost remains undisclosed.
  • Charging points will be powered by the national grid or solar PV systems in off-grid areas.
  • Drivers will be able to recharge their vehicles for up to 400 km of range in as little as five minutes.

The big picture

The move underscores BYD’s aggressive expansion into Africa’s largest automotive market, where competition among global and Chinese automakers is intensifying.

  • Chery, one of BYD’s main Chinese rivals, announced plans in July to establish manufacturing facilities in South Africa.
  • BYD is still building out its dealership network, but views South Africa as a launchpad for expansion into the rest of the continent.

It is the biggest [vehicle] market in the whole African continent, [so] we need to focus here,” said Li. “Once we start here, you can duplicate the story into other African countries.”

Context

In September 2025, BYD Auto South Africa signed an MoU with state utility Eskom to promote electric mobility. The company also recently launched a new EV model, billed as the most affordable electric car in South Africa.

Why it matters

South Africa’s EV ecosystem is still in its early stages, with limited charging infrastructure and high import costs slowing adoption. BYD’s investment could accelerate EV adoption, support energy transition goals, and pressure rivals to localize operations faster.
