Bolt Rides Now Bookable Through ChatGPT in South Africa

The ride-hailing firm joins a wave of companies embedding services directly into AI chat interfaces, betting that conversation will replace apps as the default booking tool.



South African commuters can now summon a Bolt ride without opening the Bolt app. Starting this week, the ride-hailing company has made its service accessible through ChatGPT, allowing users to request trips using plain language inside OpenAI’s chatbot.

The feature works through a plugin. Once installed from the ChatGPT plugin store, users can ask the AI assistant for a ride, receive a fare estimate, compare route options and check a driver’s estimated arrival time. The booking itself, however, still finishes inside the Bolt app, where trip details are transferred once a user is ready to travel.

How It Works — And What’s Missing

Payment remains outside ChatGPT for now. Bolt says transactions will continue to run through its own app at launch, with in-chat payments planned for a later update. That gap underscores a broader limitation of the current wave of AI-commerce integrations: the assistant can plan and compare, but rarely closes the loop.

Bolt has not disclosed how many South African users have installed the plugin, nor whether uptake data from other markets — the feature is live everywhere Bolt operates — informed the rollout.

The company also has not said whether the integration changes its cut of each fare or whether OpenAI receives any commission for facilitating bookings, a detail that matters as more transactional plugins populate the ChatGPT store.

Riding a Broader AI Trend

Bolt is framing the move as a response to shifting consumer habits rather than a standalone product bet. The company cites Accenture’s Consumer Pulse Research 2025, which surveyed more than 18,000 people across 14 countries and found that 80 percent of global travelers now use AI tools to plan trips, with more than half willing to let AI handle arrangements outright.

“South Africans are increasingly embracing AI to simplify everyday tasks, and mobility should be no different,” said Simo Kalajdzic, Bolt South Africa’s senior operations manager, adding that the integration is meant to make requesting a ride “more seamless than ever.”

The pitch fits a pattern taking hold across the tech industry. OpenAI has spent the past year courting consumer brands to build plugins that turn ChatGPT into a transaction layer — a strategy that mirrors, and directly competes with, similar ambitions at Google and Amazon.

For OpenAI, each new plugin adds a reason for users to stay inside its chat interface rather than switching to a dedicated app. For Bolt, the calculus is different: it gets a new discovery channel without having to build its own conversational AI from scratch.

Competitive Pressure in African Mobility

The integration also lands amid intensifying competition in Africa’s ride-hailing sector, where Bolt competes with Uber, Yango and a handful of regional players for market share in South Africa’s largest cities. Uber has yet to announce a comparable ChatGPT integration, though the company has previously experimented with voice- and AI-based booking features in other markets.

Whether the ChatGPT channel meaningfully shifts ride volume — or simply offers a novel front door to the same Bolt app — remains untested. Fare estimates and route comparisons delivered through a chatbot are a convenience layer, not a fundamentally different product. The real test will be whether Bolt eventually enables full in-chat payment, closing the gap between planning a trip and paying for one, and whether users trust an AI assistant enough to make that leap.

For now, the update gives South African riders one more way to reach a Bolt car — but the destination, and the app that gets them there, hasn’t changed.
