China’s Alibaba Group has said it is developing a ChatGPT-style artificial intelligence (AI) tool and is currently in internal testing.

According to a statement in a local newspaper, Alibaba said it was developing a ChatGPT-like dialogue robot which is currently open to employees for testing.

The company declined to comment if it would combine the technology with its communication app DingTalk.

Frontier innovations such as large language models and generative AI have been our focused areas since the formation of DAMO in 2017,” said an Alibaba spokesperson.

As a technology leader, we will continue to invest in turning cutting-edge innovations into value-added applications for our customers as well as their end-users through cloud services,” the spokesperson added.

Since the emergence and popularity of ChatGPT, a number of companies have been hard at work to produce AI products for consumers.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced its new Bing search engine and Edge browser with AI capabilities.

Google announced its ChatGPT rival called “Bard“.

It’s also been reported that Chinese search giant Baidu was also completing internal testing for a chatbot called Ernie.
