A new study conducted by DriveElectric revealed that electric vehicle (EV) adoption in South Africa experienced a huge growth.
The research, focusing on EV sales year-on-year saw South Africa emerge as a frontrunner in EV in Africa with a huge 127% growth in the past year.
Why This Matters
South Africa’s electric vehicle market growth reflects a growing awareness among South African consumers regarding EVs and also highlights the government’s initiatives to promote clean and sustainable transportation.
Digging Deeper
Some of South Africa’s government initiatives and policies have played a pivotal role in encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.
The country is currently discussing tax incentives and pumping billions of dollars into green energy and e-mobility industries, with a focus on saving its auto exports.
The Bigger Picture
Some African countries are looking to embrace more EVs by providing more incentives for buyers.
Tunisia became the latest country to introduce e-mobility incentives as governments across Africa by providing tax breaks and other incentives to increase the roll-out of electric vehicles.
The country’s Finance Act 2023, which came into effect on 1 January, states that “customs duties on electric vehicle charging equipment have been reduced to 10% and the value-added tax (VAT) has been reduced to 7%.”
The Tunisian Ministry of Environment projects these incentives will result in the deployment of 50,000 electric cars by 2025.
