Google Translate Adds 110 New Languages Including Ga, Nko and Tamazight

Google is adding 110 new languages to Google Translate using AI technology including the West African Manding language Nko and Tamazight, the Berber language spoken across North Africa.

This is Google’s largest language expansion thanks to the use of AI, specifically its PaLM 2 large language model.

Digging Deeper

This expansion will provide translation support for over 614 million people, representing about 8% of the global population.

About a quarter of the new languages come from Africa, representing its largest expansion of African languages to date, including Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof.
