The GSMA has launched a new Innovation Fund for Green Transition, aimed at startups using mobile technology to tackle climate change in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
The fund offers grants of £100,000 to £200,000 to bridge the gap between digital inclusion and environmental sustainability.
The Strategy: Two Birds, One Stone
The fund specifically targets solutions that solve two problems simultaneously:
- Clean Energy Access: Scaling smart metering and renewable energy solutions via mobile platforms.
- Circular Economy: Supporting “take-back” schemes and refurbished device marketplaces to keep hardware out of landfills and in the hands of users.
“We are investing directly in enterprises that… make connectivity more affordable for underserved communities while scaling practical, circular solutions.” — Philippe Bellordre, Acting Head of Mobile for Development, GSMA.
Why It Matters
For many in emerging markets, the “green transition” isn’t just about carbon credits—it’s about affordability and access.
- The Conflict: Mobile devices are essential for economic participation, but their cost and the resulting e-waste create significant barriers.
- The Goal: By funding circular economy models (refurbishment, repair, and recycling), the GSMA aims to lower the “cost of entry” for connectivity while reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
By the Numbers
- £100k–£200k: The range of equity-free grant funding available per project.
- 25%: The minimum matching funding required from the enterprise.
- 15–18 Months: The duration of the technical and financial support package.
- 250: The maximum employee count for eligible “small and growing” enterprises.
The Catch
To be eligible, companies must already have “skin in the game.” The fund isn’t for pre-revenue ideas; applicants must demonstrate active users and commercial revenue in Africa, Central/South America, or South/Southeast Asia.
What’s Next
- April 6, 2026: The hard deadline for applications (23:59 UK time).
- The Benefit: Beyond the cash, winners get a “golden ticket” to the GSMA ecosystem, including technical assistance and direct introductions to major mobile network operators (MNOs) and investors.
