According to figures revealed in a Meta filing related to the US Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit, it has been revealed that Instagram generated $32.4 billion in ad revenue in 2021, surpassing YouTube’s $28.8 billion in 2021.

Details

The filings also showed that Instagram’s ad revenue has grown from $17.9 billion in 2019 to $22 billion in 2020, while YouTube’s was $15.1 billion and $19.7 billion respectively.

Between The Lines

Instagram’s contribution to Meta’s revenue increased from 26% in 2020 to nearly 30% in the first half of 2022.

A report revealed that YouTube gives up 55 percent of each advertising dollar it makes to content owners who upload videos while Instagram coughs up a lot less.

Why This Matters

Meta is currently facing a lawsuit from the US FTC, which is seeking to separate Meta’s Instagram and WhatsApp.
