Netflix has clarified that it is not exiting the Nigerian market after multiple reports stating that it had canceled all its Nigeria Original titles.

What They’re Saying

In a statement sent to TechCabal on Wednesday, a Netflix spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria, saying, “We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our audience.”

Why it matters

Nollywood, Africa’s largest film industry, has been leveraging streaming platforms like Netflix to expand its audience and showcase local stories globally.

News of Netflix’s exit was fueled by comments from Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who spoke at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival.

The filmmaker stated that despite the performance of some of the Nigerian movies produced, Netflix seemed unimpressed by their returns in Nigeria.

Netflix had commissioned several Nigerian Originals, including Anikulapo and Blood Sisters, which were critical and commercial successes.

The big picture

Earlier this year, Netflix competitor Amazon Video cut funding and exited the African and Middle East markets to focus on Europe.
