There’s a new viral sensation happening at the moment.
No, it’s not the #BottleCapChallenge. It’s actually people online using an app called “Face App“.
Face App is a state of the art photo-editor powered by Artificially Intelligence. With this app, people take pictures of your face and the app automatically makes them look older, younger or change their styles.
It all may look innocent enough but in these days of technology, social media and privacy, there’s always a caveat when it comes using your “face” for entertainment.
Read The Terms And Conditions
An internet user pointed out something interesting in FaceApp’s terms and agreement (This is why you should always read terms and agreement before you sell your soul).
According to FaceApp’s terms and agreements, talking a picture of yourself using the app can grant the company a “perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you.”
What does that all mean? It means FaceApp can use the pictures you take and monetize it through ads and not be liable to compensate you.
These terms and agreements are not really a big deal or really that outrageous. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms have some similar agreements which allow them to use your content without informing you.
Privacy is Dead. Long Live Privacy
There is a debate about privacy in the long term. There are questions about how much information companies have on users but if some of these terms are already spelled out in legal documentation, can you really complain?
This debate will continue to rage on but I think most people will continue to use similar apps like FaceApp in the near future.
Just be cautious and know what you’re getting into. Read terms and conditions and know what you’re getting yourself into.
Faceapp must be satisfied with a ton of data streaming into their system today. So much data to crunch!
