Last week, we had a virtual interview with the new Country Manager for Uber Ghana, Marjorie Saint-Lot

Marjorie has been with Uber since 2019 as country manager for Uber in Ivory Coast and will now be overseeing both Ghana and Ivory Coast. She was officially given the position of Country Manager in January of this year.

We spoke to the Marjorie about different topics including safety, driver concerns and challenges and other things Uber had in store for the Ghanaian market.

On Driver Concerns And Challenges In Ghana

There have been some concerns by drivers with rising prices in fuel and other issues drivers had when it came with driving for Uber in Ghana.

Uber has responded to most drivers’ economic situation by upping Uber’s base price to 7 GHC (from 5 GHC) as well as having their commission rate at 20% (down from 25%). Marjorie also stated that Uber does provide incentives to help drivers earn more when they go on trips.

She stated that Uber is always constantly feedback from drivers on how to improve their situations.

On Safety

In Ghana, the wearing of masks for COVID prevention is no longer mandatory. We asked if Uber’s policy on wearing masks during trips is still mandatory and they confirmed that the policy was still in effect.

Marjorie did state that Uber would be reviewing this policy in the future and would provide updates on if and when the policy for wearing masks would be lifted.

For riders, she stated that for cash trips, a selfie photo verification will be needed before riders would be able to activate a trip.

On Uber’s 6th Year In Ghana

Uber is about to officially celebrate its 6th year in Ghana in June. Marjorie stated that she was looking forward to the event and in the lead up, Uber would be celebrating and rewarding up to 60 Uber drivers 6 weeks leading up to the June 6th event.
