WhatsApp is adding a new support feature which allows users to stay connected to the service via proxy.

In a blog post, Meta announced that the feature will allow users to continue to stay connected, even if the service is blocked by governments. They further stated that the feature wouldn’t impact the messaging app’s end-to-end encryption.

Proxy feature

We’re putting the power into people’s hands to maintain access to WhatsApp if their connection is blocked or disrupted,” the blog post read.

Choosing a proxy enables you to connect to WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and organizations around the world dedicated to helping people communicate freely.

The features comes at a time as some governments around the world especially African government tend to cut off internet services provided by telcos during times of instability or during election.

WhatsApp says that proxy support feature should be available now to users running the latest version of its iOS or Android apps.

The setting can be found in the Storage and Data menu.
