At an event last Friday, February 6th, BUILD, a technology company in Ghana, hosted a “Build Summit” which brought together innovators from the Ghanaian tech space to discuss their experiences and challenges when it came to building their business in Ghana.
The event was hosted by founder Julian Owusu, Founding Partner of BUILD at their offices in Tse Addo in Accra.
Some of the guests at the event included Valerie Labi, founder of Wahu Mobility, Anthony Owusu-Ansah of Shaq Express, and Alex Darko, CEO of Menu Finder.
Experiences In Building
In the first panel session which was moderated by Joseph-Albert Kuuire, editor-in-chief of Tech Labari, the panelists which included Valerie Labi (CEO of Wahu Mobility), Anthony Owusu-Ansah (CEO of Shaq Express) and Julian Owusu of BUILD, all gave their very blunt realities of trying to build unique solutions in Ghana and Africa.
Valerie Labi narrated her story on how she started working on the electric vehicle startup Wahu Mobility, after a trip to the northern part of Ghana. She discussed her challenges of being a small startup and trying to go into local manufacturing in a niche sector like EV.
Anthony Owusu-Ansah stated how he worked on Shaq Express after noticing challenges with deliveries. He discussed his challenges of competing with other big-name brands like Bolt Food and Glovo as a small startup that is trying to achieve profitability and gain more revenue.
Julian narrated the challenges of how he started working on Zuberi and they ran into trouble with the finance regulator who gave a warning that Zuberi needed to cease operations and get the appropriate license because their services were similar to a bank.
He discussed what led him to work on building Poynt and trying to solve problems in the local tech community.
All panelists expressed some frustration with the current business environment in Ghana, particularly with increased taxes and low revenue.
The event also had some insights from the BUILD team about what they’re building and the problems they’re trying to solve in Ghana.
