WhatsApp Goes Live With Its Payment Service In India

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 1 Min Read

It’s no secret that WhatsApp has been working on peer-to-peer payments on its platform. Now it looks like the Facebook-owned platform has launched its payment service in beta in India.

Some users in India have noticed the feature in their iOS and Android WhatsApp apps. India has one of WhatsApp’s biggest numbers with more than 200 million daily active users according to mobile analytics firm App Annie.

WhatsApp will make use of the Indian government’s Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, framework, which allows for instant transfer between participating banks.

There’s no word on when the WhatsApp payment platform will launch in other markets like Africa but let’s hope it’s soon.
